Calming donut dog beds explained
What a donut or cave dog bed is, which dogs tend to like them, how to size one and how to keep deep-pile fur clean.
A donut bed is a round, plush bed with a thick, raised rim and a soft hollow in the middle. A cave bed adds a hood. Both are shaped for dogs that like to curl up and feel enclosed.
What "calming" means here
The word is used for the shape and the softness of the bed. We do not claim a donut bed treats anxiety. Many dogs simply find a raised rim and a deep, soft hollow comfortable. If your dog is anxious, talk to your vet or a qualified trainer.
Which dogs like them
Dogs that sleep curled in a ball, dogs that rest their chin on something and dogs that like to push bedding around before they settle. Dogs that stretch out flat usually do better on a crate mattress or an orthopaedic bed.
Sizing
Donuts are sized by their diameter. Measure your dog curled up in its usual sleeping position, then choose a bed about 10cm larger. The beds in our calming range run from 70 to 80cm across, and one hooded rectangle at 76 x 61cm.
Plush, fur and shedding
Long-pile faux fur is very soft and holds hair. A weekly shake and a pass with a lint roller keep it fresh. Wash it as the care label says, and dry it fully, shaking it out now and then so the filling does not bunch.
Non-slip bases
A round bed can skate on tiles and laminate. A non-slip base helps, and where the listing mentions one, the product page does too.
Settling in
Put the bed somewhere quiet, away from draughts, and let your dog find it. A treat on the bed and a few days of patience work better than moving them onto it.
