How to wash a dog bed, whatever it is made of
Step-by-step washing and drying for foam beds, plush crate mattresses, donuts, mesh cots and wipe-clean beds, and how often to do it.
The right way to wash a dog bed depends on what it is made of. Always read the care label on the bed first. The steps below are general advice for the styles we sell.
Beds with a removable cover (foam beds)
Take the cover off and wash it on its own, at the temperature on the label. Do not put the foam in the washing machine. Wipe the foam with a damp cloth if needed and let it air. Dry the cover completely before it goes back on, because a damp cover holds a smell. Where there is a waterproof liner, check it has not shifted.
Plush crate mattresses and donuts
These are usually machine washable as a whole. Use a gentle cycle, a mild pet-safe detergent and the temperature on the label. Dry with low heat if the label allows it, or air dry, shaking the bed out now and then so the filling does not bunch.
Mesh cots
There is no cover to wash. Wipe or hose the mesh with plain water or a mild soap, and let it dry in the air.
Wipe-clean beds (faux leather, plastic, waterproof fabric)
Use a damp cloth with a drop of mild soap, rinse the cloth, wipe again and dry. Avoid bleach and harsh solvents.
Remove hair first
Vacuum the bed or run a lint roller over it before you wash. Hair collects in the machine filter otherwise.
How often?
A weekly shake and vacuum, and a wash every few weeks, is a good routine for most dogs. Wash sooner after muddy walks, illness or an accident. A spare blanket on top takes most of the dirt and is much easier to wash than the whole bed.
Use a pet-safe detergent
A mild, unperfumed detergent is kinder to a dog's nose and skin. Rinse well.
