Dog beds for large and giant breeds
How to size, support and clean a bed for a big dog: XL and XXL sizes, weight limits, foam thickness and floor space.
Big dogs are harder on beds. They are heavier, they take up more floor and they flatten thin fillings fast. A few checks help.
Start with length
A big dog needs a lot of room. Measure nose to tail base, add 10 to 15cm and check that the sleeping area, not just the outer size, covers it. Our largest beds are 107 x 76cm, 110 x 83cm, 122 x 89cm and 127 x 91cm.
Look for a weight limit
Where a listing states one, we show it on the product page. The XXL bolster bed is listed for dogs up to 68kg, and the 127 x 91cm bed up to 90kg. Beds that do not give a limit are described only by their size.
Choose firm filling
A heavy dog flattens fibre fill quickly. Memory foam and egg-crate foam hold their shape. The orthopaedic range lists the foam type and where known, its depth.
Easy access matters
Big, older dogs can find a tall bolster a step too far. Beds with an open front or a flat profile are easier to step onto.
Covers and cleaning
A removable cover is a must on a bed of this size, because the whole bed will not fit a domestic washing machine. A waterproof liner protects the foam.
Floor space
Mark out the footprint with masking tape before you order. A bed that is 122cm long needs more room than most people expect.
Keep it in place
A non-slip base stops a big bed moving when a heavy dog lands on it. Where the listing mentions one, we say so.
