Crate mattress sizing guide

How to match a crate mattress to the inside floor of your dog crate, how thick it should be and what to look for in the base.

A crate mattress should lie flat on the floor of the crate. Too small and it slides about. Too big and it rides up the sides and curls.

Measure the inside floor

Measure the inside floor of the crate, length and width, not the outside of the frame. Subtract a centimetre or two so that the mattress sits flat.

Typical sizes in our range

Our crate beds run from 60 x 45cm for small crates to 112 x 85cm for giant-breed crates, with 75 x 50cm, 90 x 60cm and 104 x 69cm in between. Each product page lists the exact size.

Thickness

Thicker means softer, thinner means more headroom. The crate mattresses here are between 7 and 10cm. If your dog has a low crate roof, measure the height too.

The base

A non-slip base stops the mattress sliding when your dog steps in and out. Where the listing mentions a grippy or Oxford-fabric base, the product page says so.

Waterproof or plush?

A plush mattress is the cosiest, and most can be machine washed. A faux-leather or waterproof mattress wipes clean, which suits puppies and dogs that have accidents. Both types are in the range, in the crate and waterproof categories.

Using the mattress outside the crate

It works just as well on the floor, in a car boot or in a kennel. Without raised sides it gives a dog nothing to lean on, so a dog that likes a bolster may want a different bed outside the crate.

Packing

Plush mattresses are often vacuum-packed. Shake out and pat the filling, then give it a few hours before you judge the thickness.
